Dell laptops catching fire - Was it really a battery problem?

Three weeks ago, I received my brand new Dell Inspiron 6400. That's exactly the kind of laptop I like. Not too big, not too small, not too heavy, capable of great performances, with its Core 2 Duo T7200, 2 gigs of RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon X1400, all this within a reasonable budget. It's working great.

Yesterday, for the first time, I decided to examine under the laptop. I was surpised to see a battery level indicator on the battery. That's a great idea! Why should I have to turn on my laptop to see the battery level?

But I was also unpleasantly surprised to notice the poor state in which my Windows XP Genuine sticker was. See for yourself:

The black stain in the middle isn't a stain. It's a hole. A burnt hole in the sticker! The sticker burned!? That's damn scary!!! I'll report this to Dell Support. I'm curious what will be their answer.

If you remember my previous post about the state in which I found my Windows XP Pro sticker on the bottom

The sticker on the bottom of my Acer 3012 looks exactly the same, and it doesn't run that hot (I sit it on my legs with no problem). So its possible Dell is telling the truth.

ps. I love my lappie. The specs (T2300, 1GB ram, 80GB HDD, 1280x800) vs weight (1.8kg) = winnah

But it does look like it continues to wear out. It's peeling from the bottom and top edges, and the hole itself looks damaged. The real answer may be both: There was a hole originally, but it's wearing out.

As for your laptop specs, the weight is the key to its appeal. Sounds great. But my number one criteria was the price vs perf, and was ready to accept some lower quality and higher weight. I have to admit Acer laptops are top notch!

I just got a cd and sticker from dell. The sticker was in a baggie and attached to a backing, and it had a hole in the middle too, the same as my Precision system. I called and asked for a new sticker because I thought the original was a defect, but the replacement looks exactly the same, except it's on a backing and not on the laptop.
