    Key Settings Lost In Shutdown

Hello, I recently downloaded slimKEYS and have been quite satisfied with its performance. After I had configured all of the keys to my liking, I found that after a few shutdowns that upon booting up, it told me it was my first time using the software, and all the settings disappeared.

Is there anyway that I could back-up these settings or ensure that this will not happen again?

     Thanks

Re: Key Settings Lost In Shutdown

I had two other users report this before, but could not pinpoint the reason. First, there is a backup config file generated automatically. You can find it under your user folder (usually "c:\users\username"), in the "AppData\Roaming\slimCODE Software Inc\slimKEYS" folder, named "slimKEYS.config.backup". When you get that "first time use" message from slimKEYS, you can quit slimKEYS, rename that backup file to "slimKEYS.config", then reload slimKEYS.

Second, if you're willing to help me find the source of this problem, you could enable tracing:

    • Quit slimKEYS manually.
    • Open the "slimKEYS.config" file with notepad.
    • Locate the line "<Tracing>false</Tracing>" and change "false" with "true" (no quotes), and save.
    • Continue using slimKEYS normally. If at one point you get that "first time use" prompt, you can check in the same folder as above for a file named "slimKEYS.log" and send it to me at support@slimcode.com.

Keep in mind that this file can grow rapidly, and tracing makes slimKEYS use more memory. As a matter of fact, tracing will be improved in the next version.

Can you also tell me more about your system. Are you on a domain, with profile roaming? Have you disabled some of the slimKEYS plug-ins? How do you shutdown your machine?

    Thanks.

Re: Key Settings Lost In Shutdown

    Hello,

Thank you very much for your quick response and sorry for my delayed response. Thank you for that information, I have saved a backup file in another location so as to always have my settings ready to be restored in case of accidental loss.

I do not think, however, that I will enable tracing, due to your observation of large files and due to the rarity of the event. I will however try to troubleshoot if it becomes more frequent. Perhaps if the tracing is significantly improved in the next version I might enable.

As far as shutdown characteristics go, I am on Windows Vista SP1 and am the only account on this computer. I have disabled a few of the plugins: slimLAUNCH.Delicious, slimLAUNCH, slimLAUNCH.FileSystem, slimLAUNCH.Passwords, slimSEARCH, and slimVOLUME (I mainly love slimKEYS for the window management and zoom and grab). For shutting down my machine, I usually close all main applications before shutdown, although in some cases some are open (e.g. Winamp, Firefox) but I'm not sure if that coincides with the errors.

Thanks once again and I hope this helps,

    EG33

Re: Key Settings Lost In Shutdown

It may be a misleading information, but the other two users who reported the same problem had also disabled some plug-ins. There's a good chance the problem is related. I'll investigate in that path.

    Thanks for the update!
